Institute for Fruit Growing of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus plans to create at least 10 new varieties of fruit and berry crops

Within the tasks of the state scientific and technical program "Agropromcomplex" for 2021-2025, the Institute for Fruit Growing of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus plans to create at least 10 new varieties of fruit and berry crops. This was the main theme at the meeting of the Chairman of the State Committee on Science and Technology of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Shumilin with the staff of the institute. During the next five-year plan, it is planned to create new varieties of pears of late ripening, characterized by high winter hardiness and high yields, hybrids of fruit crops with complex resistance to diseases and high quality of fruits, as well as pollinating varieties for single-variety commercial plantings.

For the production of high-quality planting material, specialists and scientists will conduct research on the principles of forming basic repositories of fruit and berry agricultural plants that meet the new quarantine requirements of the Eurasian Economic Union, taking into account changes in the zoned assortment of fruit and berry crops and ensuring a decrease in the percentage of reinfection to 15%. The fruit plantations with revitalized adaptive varieties, suitable for cultivation using intensive technologies, will increase the productivity of plantings and the quality of products by 20-25%. Active selection work will ensure a significant increase in the share of domestic varieties in the farms of Belarus.

In 2020, the Institute of Fruit Growing performs four tasks within the framework of the Agroindustrial Complex - Efficiency and Quality subprogram of the Agropromcomplex 2020 State Scientific and Production Enterprise and the activities of the Mobilization and Rational Use of Plant Genetic Resources of the National Bank for Breeding, Enrichment of the Cultural and Natural Flora of Belarus of the State Program Science-Intensive technologies and equipment for 2016-2020. Among the developments of the institute in 2016-2020 there are new varieties of fruit crops that are superior to domestic and foreign analogues in a number of economically valuable characteristics. These are apricot varieties Lyavon and Cameo (early ripening, winter-hardy, disease-resistant), Vayar gooseberry variety (late ripening, characterized by winter hardiness, relative resistance to spherotek, good taste), raspberry variety Uslada (winter-hardy variety of summer-ripening raspberries with slightly thorny shoots, high productivity potential), cherry variety "Maria" (cherry variety of early ripening, winter-hardy, highly resistant to coccomycosis, high taste and marketability). We should also mention the first domestic varieties of hazelnuts "Lal" and "Yashma".
