Year of the Small Homeland in Belarus

2018-2020 will be held under the badge of the Year of the Small Homeland in Belarus. The corresponding decree no. 247 was signed by Alexander Lukashenko, President of Belarus.

The document was adopted in order to stimulate the socio-economic development of regions, form an active citizenship position among the population and preserve historical, cultural and spiritual heritage.

Alexander Lukashenko announced the possible extension of the timeframe for the Year of the Small Homeland in April 2018 at the national community work day.

‘This is not even a year of a small homeland, but a three-year period, because in a year we can hardly build something there, we will create ... Belarus is our common home, and we are interested in making it cozy and exemplary,’ the Head of State said. ‘And then I proposed, let us declare this year (2018) as the Year of the Small Homeland and think about prolongation. So this is just the start.’

The Head of State explained that the adoption of such an important decision was inspired by the reflections on the importance of a small homeland in the fate of each person.

The Council of Ministers was charged with developing and approving a national program of activities on this subject jointly with the regional executive committees and the Minsk City Executive Committee until 2020.
